Our primary focus is educating and teaching young children fire safety — because the lessons that stick early save lives for a lifetime.
Pierce Volunteer Fire Department is deeply involved in fire prevention throughout our community.
Each year during Fire Prevention Week, we welcome preschool and elementary-age kids to our fire station, and our members visit local schools to share information and teach lifesaving skills — from what to do if you see smoke to how to safely exit a building.
Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of October 9th, in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871 and caused devastating damage — killing more than 250 people, leaving 100,000 homeless, destroying more than 17,400 structures, and burning more than 2,000 acres of land.
Since 1922, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has sponsored the public observance of Fire Prevention Week. In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed it a national observance — making it the longest-running public health observance in the United States.
